Transform Your Seeds into a Thriving Garden

1. Select the Appropriate Containers

Begin your seedlings in containers that are at least 2-3 inches deep and have drainage holes. Get creative with DIY options like yogurt cups, milk cartons, or even paper cups if you enjoy crafting your own solutions.

2. Select the Right Potting Soil

Use potting soil specifically designed for seedlings.

Note: Avoid using garden soil or reused potting soil from other plants. Opt for a fresh, sterile mix to ensure your seedlings grow healthy and free from diseases.

3. Planting

Small seeds can be lightly sprinkled on the soil surface, while larger seeds should be buried. After planting, ensure the seeds are moistened. To accelerate germination, cover the pots with damp paper or a plastic dome to maintain moisture until the seeds sprout. Remove the cover once you see the first signs of green growth.

4. Watering, Feeding, and Repeating

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged as the seedlings grow. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Regularly feed the seedlings with liquid fertilizer to support their growth.

5. Light

Seedlings require ample light. Use timers to provide 15 hours of light per day. If using natural light from a window, choose a south-facing exposure. Rotate the pots regularly to prevent seedlings from leaning toward the light source. When using grow lights, adjust them to hover a few inches above the seedlings’ tops. Remember to allow for periods of darkness to let the seedlings rest. As they grow taller, raise the lights accordingly.

6. Transitioning Outdoors

Avoid moving seedlings directly from a sheltered indoor environment to the garden. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. Start by placing them in a sheltered outdoor spot (partially shaded and protected from wind) for a few hours each day, gradually increasing exposure to sunlight and wind. A cold frame is an ideal environment for hardening off plants before transplanting them into the garden.
